Charlie concentrates in general litigation representing primarily life and health insurance companies, financial institutions and employees and agents in defense of first party actions, particularly fraud, bad faith and punitive damage claims, and class actions. Charlie also regularly represents clients in the areas of personal injury and products liability defense, employment defense, insurance coverage and surety and fidelity defense and corporate defense.

Before joining Spain & Gillon, Charlie served as a contracting officer for the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1970, and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1971 to 1975. Charlie is a member of the Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar Association (having served on the Executive Committee), Alabama Defense Lawyers Association (previous Vice President), International Association of Defense Counsel, Defense Research Institute, the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, and the American Bar Association. Charlie is a registered mediator with the Alabama Center for Dispute Resolution.

Charlie is a faculty member for the Alabama Bar Institute for Continuing Education, and is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education and legal association seminars. He has also published several articles and papers dealing with insurance defense related topics.
